December
In December, here in the northeast, things can get pretty cold! In fact, many people seek to go south to warmer climates to escape the cold, harsh winters we experience. Because we are resourceful, we have figured out ways to survive, endure and adapt to the cold. So we say bring it on; we are ready to beat the cold!
Beating the cold weather is one thing; but we are helpless to beat the coldness and hardness of the human heart! Since the Fall of Adam & Eve in the Garden, hearts, which were created to enjoy the warmth of God’s Love in all its fullness have grown cold and hard . Here’s the Bible’s description of the condition of the human heart. You will need to look up these passages and ask the Holy Spirit to see just what these passages have to do with you and me.
Zechariah 7: 11-12, Proverbs 28:14, Psalm 95: 8, Mark 6: 52, Isaiah 6: 10.
There are many more passages that talk about the coldness and hardness of the human heart. We should not get too comfortable thinking that because we are Christians we are immune to a cold, hard heart. The coldness of sin and the stubbornness of human pride can come on us like a blizzard!
If we get cold in a northeastern winter; we just put on more clothes, stoke the fire or turn up the heat.
What can we do when our hearts become cold and hard? The answer is Jesus Christ.
In December, a cold month for us; we celebrate the Birth of the One who alone can warm the coldness, hardness of the hearts of all. He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and with fire! Luke 3: 16. Is it any wonder why Luke talks about fire here? Fire heats up and melts the coldest and hardest of things in this world. The coldest and hardest in all the universe is the human heart that puts itself on the throne reserved for Jesus Christ, who is supposed to be sitting on the throne of your life and mine.
Which life (heart) is yours? If it is self directed the weather stands the risk of getting cold. If it’s Christ directed, your heart will be warm and blessed by God! So it’s simple; you want to get warm, move closer to the fire!
John the Baptist said, He (Jesus) is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and with fire! That is not my words, but the Word of God. Draw closer to the fire and be filled with the warmth of God. This is why Jesus was born; this is why we celebrate! He waits to warm you! Will you draw closer to the fire of His Spirit?
May you have a most blessed Christmas filled with warming fire of Jesus Christ!
