March

There is a story told of a Masai warrior. A Masai warrior receives scars as a ritual each time he kills a lion or some other wild creature. But it was not the ritual scars that made a certain warrior, Joseph, special.

Once, Dr. Billy Graham was visiting Africa and Joseph wanted an opportunity to meet with him and share the story of his life.

This is Joseph’s story. On a hot, dusty day in Africa an evangelist shared the good news of Jesus Christ with Joseph and Joseph accepted Christ and became a believer. The very first thing Joseph wanted to do was to go back to his village and share the good news with his tribe. He expected the people to light up with joy and receive the good news as he did. Instead they not only showed no appreciation for it, but some even became hostile. The men of the village held him down, while the women beat him with pieces of barbed wire. He was dragged from their village and left in the bush to die. He managed to somehow survive and he desired to go back to his people to share again. The same thing happened; he was beaten and left for dead. Miraculously he survived the second beating as well.

Believe it or not Joseph went back a third time and before he started to speak they began beating him again. Only before he lost consciousness he remembered seeing the women who were beating him begin to weep. The very ones who were trying to take his life were now trying to save him. He showed Dr. Graham his scars after sharing his story and Billy Graham said, I’m not fit to untie his shoes and Joseph wanted to meet me? No one remembers the ritual scars he received as a Masai warrior but Joseph was known by the scars he received for sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

Like Joseph, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be recognized by His scars, the scars He received in His beatings, crowning and crucifixion. We who are His Body, the Church, should also be recognized by how much we suffer for Him. What kind of scars have you received for the cause of Jesus Christ? What sorrows? What crosses? He endured so we can also endure. The Lord is with you; don’t give up.
