Once upon a time, birds were getting together to build a church. At a big bird meeting everyone had a chance to talk about the idea. Mrs. Canary (known to all by her beautiful voice) spoke up. She said, whatever we do, this church must be built around singing, which should be our main goal. Right away, Mr. Owl quickly stood up and disagreed. Wisdom, he said, that’s what’s important, and the church must be built for wisdom. Mr. Duck quacked out his comment. I don’t care what else you do, but we must build our church beside a lake! The Trumpeter swan stood up, fluffed his stately feathers and said, let’s be sure to build a beautiful pipe organ above all else. On and on through the night, all the birds spoke on how they thought the church should be built. I think that by now you realize that, that church; is for the birds!

As we think of that spiritual birdhouse just described, we appreciate that the church is not for the birds, but the church is special. The church really is God’s chosen people, purchased and won by the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son. We all have an important part in it. We are all in this together. We are all members of Christ’s Body, the Church. The Apostle Paul takes a good deal of time and trouble to describe how the Church is to function. We are all members of the Body of Christ and individually members of it. If we all put all of our individual gifts and blessings together; we’ll see great things happening. None of us can do it alone; we need each other. Take some time to read Paul’s description of the church in Romans 12. Thank God our church is not for the birds, but an important Body for our Lord Jesus Christ. Let’s continue in Christ, to be a Beacon of Light to our community.
