Pastor's Place

September

A little boy decided to help his father. He heard his dad say that his car was low on gas. The little boy knew how to fill the tank. He also knew it wasn’t too complicated. He had watched his father do it a hundred times. So with confidence, he removed the cap, got the garden hose—just like the hose at the pump—he squeezed the nozzle. It looked just like the nozzle at the gas pump. Then he proceeded to fill the gas tank with water.

With a smile, he waited for his dad to start the car—to see the gas gauge now read FULL. The boy would wait for his dad to thank him kindly for his efforts. You know what happened. His father tried to start the car. It sputtered and died. Dad didn’t say thank you.

As we look at the world, we see a great many people making the same mistake that little boy made. The difference is that people are making a spiritual mistake instead of a physical one. Like the little boy, they start out trying to do the right thing. For these spiritual searchers, the right thing is trying to find a god. Also like the little guy, they try to do something that looks good and feels right. In their search to be at peace with their god, they are ready to make any sacrifice they think will get his attention. They are ready to try hard to please him.

Finally, just like the little boy, people make a crucial miscalculation. They eventually discover that the best intentions and their greatest sincerity can never turn water into gasoline. No matter how much they believe, water is never going to power their car and loyalty to a false god will never save them. On the Day of Judgment, these folks who have worked so hard to please their false god and who expect to hear a thank you will be disappointed.

For 2005 years the word has gone out: Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name (other than that of Jesus)…by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)

So what are you spending your time, effort, and energy on? Is it only water or is it the gas which you need to run your life? Why not come to Church this Sunday and find the fuel you need by listening to and receiving your Lord Jesus Christ. Nothing else is worth it in this world. It’s September and it’s a good idea to get a jump start. It’s never too late to fill you empty tank with Jesus Christ. Bring the little ones too; they need to be guided and taught so they don’t make the same mistakes.
